FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THAI YOGA MASSAGE AND REGULAR TABLE MASSAGE?

Whereas a table massage is performed on a table with the client completely disrobed, Thai Massage is performed with the client fully clothed on a thick comfy mat on the floor.

In a table massage the therapist applies oil or lotion to glide across the skin and muscle tissue during the session. A Thai therapist is working through the clients clothing so no oil is used generally speaking. (Though I do like to sprinkle a little essential oil into my neck and scalp work).

In a table massage your therapist will use their hands, knuckles, elbows and forearms to apply the massage to the client, with a Thai massage the practitioner uses hands, forearms, elbows, knees, and even their ( CLEAN and SANITIZED ) feet to apply deep compressive pressure to muscles.

Table massage tends to be fairly static from the client perspective. In a Thai Massage, the client has to participate a bit more, the therapist will guide the client’s breath during an assisted stretch much the way you would work with the breath in a yoga posture. There is a lot of bending, stretching, limb rotation, body rocking, and percussive strokes used in Thai Yoga Massage. And while some massage therapists will incorporate stretching into a table massage, it’s not the main focus of the massage the way it is in Thai Yoga Massage.

  • DO I NEED TO BE FLEXIBLE?

Absolutely not! That is something we can really help improve through a Thai Yoga Massage Session.

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THAI MASSAGE AND THAI YOGA MASSAGE?

Nothing but the name really. A “traditional” Thai Massage will typically begin at the client’s feet, whereas a Thai Yoga Massage sometimes starts on the shoulders but can also start at the feet depending on the client’s needs. But these are not hard and fast rules and the general content and application of the massage are the exact same. It’s really just branding.

  • IF I AM FULLY CLOTHED, WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Athletic or yoga gear are the best choice for a Thai Massage. Long pants, long sleeves usually help keep the client warm when their temperature drops during the session but short sleeves are ok. Mainly we want clothing that allows for bending, stretching, and movement of the clients body. Definitely no skirts, dresses, button down shirts, jeans, or chinos.

  • IS IT OK TO RECEIVE THAI YOGA MASSAGE IF I AM PREGNANT?

Thai Massage is contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy. However there are many good techniques that can be applied in side lying and seated positions for second and third trimester. In truth, most moms-to-be would likely prefer the relaxation of a Pre-Natal table massage. As deep relaxation can be hard to come by during pregnancy. Depending on the length of the session, Thai Massage tends to be a bit more invigorating than relaxing. So yes a second or third trimester pregnant mom- to-be can absolutely receive a Thai Massage but they’ll typically prefer a Pre-natal Massage on the table for the relaxation.

  • WHAT ARE BENEFITS?

    • Restore balance between areas of excess and restraint.
    • Stress Reduction.
    • Increasing the Range of Motion throughout the entire body.
    • Improved Circulation.
    • Centering the Mind and Body.
    • Increasing overall flexibility.
    • Speed the recovery after intense workouts or from Jet-Lag.
    • Boost energy.
  • WHAT ARE CONTRAINDICATIONS?

Same as table massage for the most part

    • Infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds.
    • Immediately after surgery.
    • Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor.
    • Predisposition to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged.
    • If you have heart disease, please check with your doctor before having any massage.
    • Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures. Please let your therapist know if these exist
  • WILL I BE SORE AFTERWARDS?

Typically people leave a a Thai Massage feeling both energized and relaxed. I know these things are contradictory. It’s hard to explain unless you have felt it. Longer sessions can leave you feeling more relaxed than energized and shorter sessions leave you feeling more energized than relaxed. The next day after a longer session, 90 minutes or 2 hours, a client can feel a little fatigued not that dissimilar to how you might feel the day after a workout, tired but typically without the soreness. This typically passes after a day and clients have reported feeling elevated energy for up to two weeks post their Thai Yoga Massage session.

  • WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR TREATING?

All the same complaints that people come to massage with, neck and shoulder tension, low back pain, sore legs from working on feet all day. Thai Yoga Massage helps with stress reduction and holds space for self recovery for everyone from stay at home moms, to those who frequently travel, to those with high stress corporate jobs.

Julia’s practice was about 50% touring musicians. When they came off the road, Thai Massage helped them with “re-entry” which can be really hard. 25% of my clientele were athletes. Thai Massage is great before and after a race. I have had athletes report that they performed faster than usual (running and hockey). The remainder of my clientele were folks who worked in the private sector and lived regular lives. Thai Yoga Massage was often a novel experience for them that left them with energy to start new exercise routines or help them feel more open and available for their families and loved ones. Thai Massage can be deeply healing emotionally for those who are in tuned with how their body stores stress and trauma. Results vary according to the individuals’ self awareness and inward focus during the session. I have been witness to and experienced personally many deeply healing Thai sessions.

  • Can I eat before my massage?

Definitely not recommended! Thai Yoga Massage winds up putting some pressure on the abdomen because of the nature of the stretches and back compressions. If someone comes in for a Thai session just after eating, they WILL get gassy. I don’t really mind if someone toots during a session, that’s a compliment to a massage therapist. But for a client that can be absolutely mortifying and will invariably take them out of the relaxation zone which we don’t want. I usually recommend not eating for an hour before a Thai session.

“O.liv uses a blend of extra virgin olive oil as our standard massage oil. We add free “shots” of high grade essential oil and herbal powders from the Body Bar, customizing each massage to individual needs.”
